Intro: My name is Shane Feusier. I have been the girls coach for 4 of the last 5 years. I am a teacher at Academy of the Redwoods and a USPTA certified tennis teaching professional.
The Program: Our program has two objectives: 1) to teach and develop the top 6 to 8 girls to be competitive as our varsity team within our league; and 2) to teach and develop our beginning tennis players (junior varsity) to enjoy the game and prepare for their opportunities on the varsity team. We are a no-cut team. All girls are welcome regardless of their current level of ability. We will make an attempt to get every girl into at least one varsity match during the season.
Practices: Practices will be conducted on Monday through Friday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the school tennis courts on all non-match days. Matches are scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays. Wednesdays are late practices from 5:00 to 7:00. This allows players to have medical appointments and meetings after school without missing practice, as well as giving them time to work on homework after their early releases on Wednesdays. Please schedule, if possible, your child's appointments for Wednesday afternoons.
Redding Tournament: We have a tradition (past 5 years) of taking our varsity team to a pre-season tournament in Redding. This year the tournament will be held on Friday September 10 and Saturday September 11. We will be taking 10 of our 19 girls over to the tournament. I would love to take all 19 girls but we are guaranteed matches for only 6 players. We usually can get matches for another 4 players but not another 13.
Team Travel: All players who make the travel team(s) (top 6 to 8 girls) have to pay the district athletic transportation fee ($80). If a player is eligible for free or reduced lunches then the transportation fee is waived. Our district has several unbreakable rules concerning team travel to events:
1. All participants must take school provided transportation to the event.
2. Players may ride the school transportation home or can be signed out to:
a. Parents and legal guardians who are present at the end of the event.
b. Another parent if a documented request (form in the office) to allow your student to leave with a specific person is submitted and approved 24 hours prior to the event.
Philosophy: Tennis is one of the few high school sports that can be continued throughout a life time. The primary goal of this program is to develop a highly successful varsity team. Just slightly behind the primary goal is our goal to increase the skills of all members of the team (varsity and junior varsity) and to make their experiences on the courts and with their team enjoyable and fun. Our program will not be evaluated solely on success throughout the season but also from the number of players still playing tennis twenty years from now.
Contacting me: Feel free to call me whenever you have questions about our program. My phone is set to voice mail during school hours but I will get back to you asap. I’m also somewhat of a computer geek so email is another way to contact me.
